The form of this building evolved as a direct response to the predominant site feature – the Green Lane Reservoir which borders the edge of the site. The design intent was to forge a relationship between the building and the reservoir, with the three dimensional organization of the building becoming an embodiment of the site. The public functions of the building are organized along the eastern edge of the site, while the academic functions splay along a northwest axis in order to allow for expansive views of the reservoir and to capture maximum daylighting within the classroom spaces. The courtyard between these two building components embraces the reservoir and is hinged by an Administrative block along the northern edge. This Administrative block provides a public identity to the community at large. The Library anchors the composition at the heart of the building as it meshes with the site and reservoir beyond. The predominantly masonry construction with punched openings evolves into metal clad elements with expansive glazing and views to reinforce the connection to the reservoir. The project has been awarded LEED Gold Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council for incorporation of energy efficient systems, sustainable design principles, and site design features that support long term ecological balance. The new Middle School not only provides a state of the art facility for learning – the building itself is a tool for learning that fosters each student’s appreciation of the natural world.
