Breslin Architects was honored with an “Excellence in Architecture” award from the American Institute of Architects/Eastern Pennsylvania for this addition to the Allentown Public Library.
The addition is raised on columns above a portion of the existing parking area. This not only preserved the parking but allowed additional spaces through more efficient reorganization. The brick and granite exterior materials were chosen to blend with the existing building.
The quality of the interior spaces in enhanced by long, linear, barrel-vaulted skylights. Special baffles hanging within the skylights allow an abundance of diffused sunlight and prevent direct light from damaging books.
