Located in the urban core of the Pennsylvania’s third largest city, Brigadier General Anna Mae Hays Elementary School opened in the Fall 2020 to approximately 850 students in grades K-5. Named in honor of the first female General and Allentown native, the 114,000 sf school sits on a 2.5-acre repurposed industrial site that straddles a transition between medium density residential and light manufacturing areas. Site amenities include staff parking for 75 vehicles, service access, bus and car drop off, and 3,000 sf playground fully open to community use. The School’s two major building volumes are the 4-story Academic Wing to the west and a 2-story Shared Facility Wing to the east. These are linked by the school’s central Main Lobby. Above the main floor, a glass enclosed bridge passes through the Lobby connecting the wings at the upper levels. Two other glass-walled overlooks offer unique small group instructional spaces as well as dramatic views to the exterior: Allentown’s center city skyline in one direction and the distant Blue Mountain in the other. The completion of the Hays Elementary School is a major milestone in the Allentown School District’s commitment to renewing its instructional resources for 21st century education and fully integrating schools within their neighborhood, nurturing a genuine partnership with the community.
