Breslin Architects was honored with an “Award of Excellence” from the American Institute of Architects for the design of this Middle School. The building, located on a site in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania, provides generous windows that offer commanding views of Mt. Nittany and the surrounding countryside as well as furnishing the classrooms with an abundance of natural light. The exterior red brick and cast stone were selected to harmonize with an adjacent elementary school to create a campus-like setting.
Two parallel classroom wings are joined at one end by a centrally located library and at the other end by the main lobby, thus forming a central courtyard. This arrangement provides a simple circulation pattern and allows access to all of the shared use facilities from the main lobby. The core facilities such as the gymnasium, auditorium, and cafeteria can then be opened to the community when school is not in session.
