Breslin Architects achieved a "Design Citation" from the Pennsylvania State Art Commission for the design of this project.
The design of this multi-story, 63,000 sq. ft. elementary school is in direct response to a very limited urban site. The carefully studied phasing of construction permitted the two existing schools to remain in operations until the completion of the new school. Once occupied, the two original schools were removed and a much needed community park and playground were constructed.
Various colors and patterns of bricks were introduced to manipulate the scale of the school. The three story classroom wall is patterned to create a festive backdrop to the children's playground. The sculptural massing and stepping-back of various floor levels allows the building to harmonize with the scale of the existing streetscape.
