Blue Bell Elementary School is nestled in the historic town of Blue Bell, Montgomery County. The Wissahickon School District was faced with the need to increase building capacity as well as provide modern core facilities comparable to the District’s other elementary schools. As a community elementary school, maintaining the character of the property and existing school were a priority while improving traffic flow and student safety. The existing Blue Bell Elementary school was built in 1955 and consists of four classroom wings with three open courtyards. Combined with the need for a larger multi-purpose room, to improve the school’s vehicular circulation, and to address the security concerns with an open building perimeter, a new addition will be added on the backside of the building perpendicular to the existing classroom wings. A secondary entrance and a new bus loop will be constructed to separate parent and bus drop-off to improve vehicular circulation. The new addition will consist of a new multi-purpose room with a gymnasium and cafeteria, a new kitchen and serving area, nine new classrooms, and a flexible large group area. The new addition will enclose the courtyards and improve interior circulation by connecting the classroom wings to one another. The existing multi-purpose room, stage, and kitchen area at the front of the building will be renovated into a new conference room, special education and emotional support classrooms, and a faculty planning area.
