This project is part of the Kennett Consolidated School District’s ambitious goal to modernize its elementary school facilities to support 21st Century Learning. The new 105,000 square foot school will replace the existing Greenwood Elementary School on the same site. Combining modern design elements with traditional red brick details and a bell tower framing the main entrance, the design of the school reflects the history of the area, the design formality of its neighbor Longwood Gardens, and the needs of a modern learning environment.
The school is organized into two wings. The public wing includes the main entrance, administration space, media center, gymnasium, cafeteria, and related arts rooms. The second wing includes the classrooms and flexible support spaces across two floors.
Site features greatly influenced the design of the school. Located on a hill, the classroom wing is strategically situated to take advantage of views across the low-lying meadow, woods and wetlands. The two-story classroom wing steps down the hill, the upper floor connects back to the public wing via two glass bridges, both of which overlook secure outdoor learning spaces located between the two wings.
